Steuben Memorial State Historic Site Opens for 2010 Season & Hosts Special Program: The Baron's Gardening was no Picnic

Rome, NY: On Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, 2010, the gates to the parking lot at Steuben Memorial State Historic Site will open for the season from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Park rangers from Fort Stanwix National Monument will provide interpretive services at the site as staffing permits.

Also on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, from 1 to 2 p.m., a park ranger will present a special program entitled: The Baron's Gardening was no Picnic. Friedrich von Steuben was quick to put down roots on land granted him in upstate New York for his services to the United States of America. Participants in the wintertime Steuben Family Junior Master Gardeners program with plant the same species of plants that the Baron planted in his gardens. Harvesting of these historic plants will take place on Labor Day, Monday, September 6. Please remember, if you bring a lunch, Steuben Memorial is a pack in - pack out site. Bring your own drinking water or other nonalcoholic drink.

Steuben Memorial State Historic Site is open seven days a week from dawn to dusk. Visitors are permitted to park along the road and walk through the site. From Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, to Labor Day, Monday, September 6, the gates to the parking lot are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for visitors who wish to drive onto the site. This schedule will remain in effect until the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (NYSOPRHP) informs Fort Stanwix National Monument otherwise.


Fort Stanwix National Monument is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the park is free.
