The 7th grade students from Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Middle School and the National Park Service
Contact: Valerie Morgan Contact: 315-338-7730 Now through the week of February 18th, visitors to Fort Stanwix National Monument will have the opportunity to see a display of a number of school projects completed by 7th grade students from Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Middle School. Located in the Marinus Willett Center, visitors will find creative works such as fictitious journals based on American Revolutionary War experiences to fort models comparing cell structures to military fortifications. Each project is unique and demonstrates the skills and knowledge students have gained through these assignments. History teacher Todd Donnelly worked with his students and fellow teachers in the school to create an interdisciplinary curriculum about Fort Stanwix focusing on a variety of subjects such as language arts, science, and history. Science teacher Nora Burnop developed the idea of comparing cell structures to military fortifications - a favorite project for many of the students. "The students are very excited to have their work on display," said Donnelly. "They worked hard, and it is reflected in the projects." The public may view the projects any time during the park's regular operating hours through the week of February 18th. The park has proudly hosted the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Middle School student project display since the inception of the program in 2004. Fort Stanwix National Monument is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the park is free. Activities are ongoing unless noted.
