In honor of the 40th anniversary of the opening of Fort Stanwix National Monument, park partners at the Rome Historical Society and the park itself have created a two-part exhibit entitled "From Memory to Monument." The exhibit will be unveiled at both the Rome Historical Society (RHS) and the Fort Stanwix visitor center on Saturday, November 12, 2016. Ceremonies begin at the park visitor center at 2 p.m., and continue at the RHS at 4 p.m. with a general reception.
Both parts of the exhibit will highlight photos of the pre-urban renewal Rome, NY downtown and the urban renewal process, the monumental efforts to bring "Fort Stanwix" to life in the 1960s and 1970s, and details about the archeological process and reconstruction of the fort.
There is a storied history between the fort and the Rome community, " said park superintendent Frank Barrows, "This exhibit, along with programs that will follow the opening, provide an opportunity for us to start a conversation about the mixed emotions associated with reconstructing the fort and the impacts to the city and its residents. As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the reconstruction of Fort Stanwix, we look forward to creating a shared vision for the fort's future and hope this exhibit can serve as a catalyst to engage our local communities and partners in that effort."
In addition to being the first major exhibit at the Rome Historical Society in seven years, the exhibit unveiling also marks the debut of the RHS as the official Friends group of Fort Stanwix National Monument. This partnership is a culminating step to acknowledging the existing ties and shared histories between the Rome Historical Society and Fort Stanwix National Monument.
