On Saturday, October 27, Fort Stanwix National Monument will offer a special nighttime tour through the fort. This candlelit program, called Mysteries, Myths, & Mayhem, explores the more terrifying aspects of life for the soldiers and their families along the New York frontier.

During this once-a-year event, several tours will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:10 p.m. All event attendees should meet at the visitor center for the guided walk through the fort. Tours will leave from the rear door of the visitor center at 6:30, 6:50, 7:10, 7:30, 7:50 and 8:10 p.m. Upon arrival, visitors will be organized into tour groups of around 25 people by park staff for each time slot. Additional accommodations will be made to ensure all visitors to the park get a place in one of the tour groups. The event will take place rain or shine, so please dress for the weather.

True life scary stories will be told, including “the sniper and the scarecrow,” a true tale about a soldier faced with certain death if he took watch on the fort wall. “These people lived in fear every day that they served at this wilderness outpost,” said Park Ranger Bill Sawyer. “Sometimes their real-life experiences seemed more like a modern horror story.”

The next event taking place at Fort Stanwix National Monument is an Armistice Day Commemoration, on Sunday, November 11. A full schedule of park events can be found on www.nps.gov/fost. All park events are free.

Fort Stanwix National Monument is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the park is free. For more information about upcoming events please call the park at (315) 338-7730.
