On Friday, October 9, Fort Stanwix National Monument will offer a special nighttime tour through the fort. This candlelit program, called Mysteries, Myths, & Mayhem, explores the more terrifying aspects of life for the soldiers and their families along the New York frontier.

One story being presented is that of the sniper and the scarecrow, a true tale about a soldier faced with certain death if he took station on the fort wall. "These people lived in fear every day that they served at this wilderness outpost," said Park Ranger Bill Sawyer. "Sometimes their real-life experiences seemed more like a modern horror story."

During this once-a-year event several tours will run from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. All event attendees should meet at the visitor center for the guided walk through the fort. The first tour will leave from the rear door at 6:30 pm and the last will leave at 8 pm. The event will take place rain or shine, so please dress for the weather.

Fort Stanwix National Monument is open seven days a week from 9 am to 5 pm. Admission to the park is free. For more information about upcoming events please call the park at (315) 338-7730.
