Rome, NY: "Growing Good Kids" is the theme for the "Junior Master Gardener Program" at the Fort Stanwix National Monument. Each week features an activity and a take-home project that revolves around history and gardening. "Come help us dig into history and grow new friends," says Park Ranger Susan Jones.

Fort Stanwix is starting a Junior Master Gardener program that will help children grow and learn through "hands-on" learning experiences and activities. Children will grow plants for a community service project and in turn grow themselves. The Junior Master Gardener program provides a positive learning experience for youth to develop leadership, responsibility and community pride through organized gardening activities This national Junior Master Gardener program combines a unique gardening based curriculum and web based instruction, community service, character growing education and service-based learning, into a fun and exciting certification program for youth. This 4H-produced program is designed to incorporate science, math, language arts, geography, history and other subject area disciplines into the "hands-on" gardening based activities.

The program is free of charge, begins Sunday, March 28, and will run every Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. through Memorial Day, May 31st, starting at the Marinus Willett Center at the intersection of James St. and Erie Blvd. The program is primarily for children from ages 8 to 12, but is open to anyone interested in digging into history and growing new friends.

Fort Stanwix National Monument is open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission to the park is free. Activities are ongoing unless noted.
