Jeffrey Collins has been named acting superintendent of Fort Stanwix National Monument for four months beginning November 12, 2006. Collins has served as Chief Ranger of Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site in southeastern Pennsylvania since 1994. In making the appointment, acting NPS NE Region Director Dennis R. Reidenbach said “We’re pleased to have Jeffrey’s steady direction at Fort Stanwix. He brings a wealth of experience with him.”

“We will miss Ken Mabery, Acting Superintendent of Fort Stanwix since July, who will head west to assume the superintendency at Scotts Bluff National Monument in Gering, Nebraska,” Reidenbach added.

Reidenbach said that the NPS will conduct a search for a new superintendent who will build on past success. While the selection process is long, it is also thorough, and we will select the candidate who will continue moving the park forward.”

Collins commented, “I’m looking forward to working at Fort Stanwix. I’ve heard great things about the new facilities, the people of the park, the community, and the city of Rome. At Hopewell Furnace the focus is on 19th century history and it is a welcome opportunity to return to an 18th century history story.”

Collins has worked for the National Park Service since 1974. He holds a bachelors degree in Wildlife Science from the University of Washington. He began his NPS career as a seasonal ranger at Olympic National Park and later worked at Isle Royale National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Independence National Historical Park, Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site, and Lowell National Historical Park. He lives with his wife Toni, a museum director for the state of Pennsylvania, and four dogs in Ephrata, PA.
