Contact: Nancy Demyttenaere, (315) 336-4094 If you live in heart of the City of Rome, or near the Village of Oriskany, or any place in between, chances are you live on historic ground. When you set about your daily routine, you travel across a landscape where an important part of the American Revolution took place. Maybe you've visited Fort Stanwix NM or Oriskany Battlefield SHS before and have stood at the center of their history, but how big is the greater battlefield on which the fighting of August 1777 took place and so changed American history? Funded by a grant from the NPS American Battlefield Protection Program, archaeologists and other experts have studied that very question over the last two years. Brought together through a partnership between the Rome Area Chamber of Commerce, Fort Stanwix NM and the Oriskany Battlefield SHS, a team of specialists have searched documents, consulted old maps and inventoried the clues to map the answer. Senior scientists from the Public Archaeology Facility, a research unit of SUNY-Binghamton, will present their findings to the public on Wednesday, June 26th, 5:30-7:30PM. Join them at the Rome Historical Society's Community Room for an opportunity to meet the experts, enjoy a social evening, and ask your own questions about important discoveries on the greater battlefield. Fort Stanwix National Monument is open seven days a week from 9 am to 5 pm. Admission to the park is free. Activities are ongoing unless noted.
