(Rome, New York) – On Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at 1:30p.m. Fort Stanwix National Monument Superintendent Debbie Conway will present The President’s Volunteer Service Award  to the Oneida Indian Nations’ First Allies Living History program. The President’s Volunteer Service Award is given to groups and individuals who have contributed 4,000 or more of volunteer time. The First Allies Living Program has donated over 11, 300 hours of time primary to Fort Stanwix National Monument, but has also provided service to Valley Forge National Historical Park, Fort Necessity National Historical Park, Springfield Armory National Historical Park, Saratoga National Historical Park and Grant’s Tomb.

The mission of the First Allies Living History Program is to share the history and culture of the Oneida People and to tell the role of the Oneida Nation in the development of the fledgling United States. The Oneida Indians were the first allies of the United States, joining in the fight with the colonists during the American Revolution. Fort Stanwix was built on Oneida land to protect the carrying place during the French and Indian war and then refortified during the revolution by the Americans. Today through a partnership agreement, members of the Oneida Nation and the First Allies Living History Program share their history with visitors to the fort. Superintendent Conway said, "We are very thankful for all the support and assistance the First Allies program provides to the fort. This partnership helps bring the fort to life for visitors. Visitors have an opportunity to learn about the siege of Fort Stanwix, not just through the eyes of the colonists, but also their Native allies."

Fort Stanwix National Monument is open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission to the park is free.   Activities are ongoing unless noted. For more information about upcoming events please call the park at (315)338-7730.
