Rome, NY: Here it is; the event people have been asking about all year, the announcement for October’s Paranormal Investigation and Family Encampment event of suspense and discovery at Fort Stanwix National Monument. The event will be at the fort on October 16, and start at 5 p.m. inside the Marinus Willett Center located at the intersection James and Dominick Streets. This is the final event celebrating Fort Stanwix National Monument’s 75th birthday during 2010.
People and families are invited to join park staff, volunteers and partners for this unique opportunity to explore paranormal activity at Fort Stanwix. Paranormal investigators, psychics, mediums and clairvoyants have identified Fort Stanwix as one of the most haunted places in the Mohawk Valley. Come out and discover if this is true.
In August, members of the Northern Paranormal Society conducted an investigation at the fort (www.thenorthernparanormalsociety.com). During this October 16 event, these investigators will reveal their findings to visitors, and discuss and demonstrate how paranormal investigations are conducted.
Because of space, safety and logistical concerns, this event will be limited to 100 people. By 5 p.m. Saturday, October 9, people wishing to join this event must call the park at (315) 338-7730 to make a reservation.
Additionally, families, up to 40 people total, will have the opportunity to camp overnight in the fort’s quarters. Do you think you can last through the night?
For those who choose not to stay overnight, the event will end at 11 p.m. Saturday night.
The costs for the program are $32 per person for people not camping overnight, and $35 per person for people who are camping overnight. A catered dinner, and breakfast for people camping overnight, will be provided by The Savoy restaurant. The dinner includes a Revolutionary War soldier’s meal of stew and bread, and non-carbonated soft drinks. Overnight campers will enjoy a Continental breakfast Sunday morning.
If you wish to supplement these meals with something more, like the soldiers, women and children did who served at Fort Stanwix; you will need to provide this yourself.
After making your reservation, please make your checks or money orders payable to the Rome Area Chamber of Commerce; and send these or cash, with the names of reserved participants, to the Rome Area Chamber of Commerce, 139 West Dominick Street, Rome, NY, 13440-5809; phone (315) 337-1700.
Families who wish to spend the night at the fort will be sleeping in a rustic setting on straw beds and in areas with dirt floors. People with severe allergies and asthma are cautioned to consider their participation in this event overnight because of the mold, mildew, dust and straw, and should contact the park for more information or concerns. Please bring your sleeping bags and pillows, flashlights, and blankets to lie over the straw beds. Additionally, please remember that because of space limitations and the configuration of the rooms plan to share rooms with other families. Families will be separated as much as possible within the fort and the rooms.
Come out, enjoy and celebrate Fort Stanwix National Monument’s 75th birthday.
