On Saturday, October 6th Fort Stanwix National Monument will hold this year’s annual International Archeology Day Celebration. Visitors will have the opportunity to dig into the world of archeology to learn more about the tools they use and see some of the artifacts uncovered at the site.  Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., hands-on activities and displays will take place at the park visitor center located at 100 North James Street. Archeology Day is free and open to the public.

Archeologists from several places around New York State will be on site to talk with visitors about the things they have found and what it is like to be an archeologist. New this year is an artifact scavenger hunt and that challenges visitors to find objects in the fort that look like the artifacts uncovered by archeologists. A ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the museum collection will also be offered to allow visitors entrance into restricted collection storage spaces and to see artifacts not on exhibit in the park.

Rome Historical Society will also be unveiling their newest exhibit, “Dig! Study! Share!”, that features archeology and encourages visitors to become archeologists. Designed just for kids, this interactive exhibit features a dig pit full of strange objects ready to be examined and cataloged by young aspiring archaeologists. Screens, shovels, brushes, and more can all be used while searching for artifacts, just like at a real archaeological dig. “As we update the museum, we recognize the need to have “hands-on” activities for youth as they learn and explore history,” said Arthur L. Simmons III, Executive Director. Rome Historical Society will open their exhibit at 10 a.m.  at 200 Church Street.
