On Thursday, July 4, Fort Stanwix National Monument is hosting a free event in honor of our nation’s birthday.  Public readings of the Declaration of Independence will take place at 10:45 a.m. and 1 p.m., followed by salutes to the new nation. New opportunities this year include a bring-your-own picnic at noon, a family fun parade at 1:15 p.m., and several interactive exhibits throughout the day. A full list of the day’s events can be found on the park website and Facebook page.

Independence Day in 1780, for the First New York Regiment at Fort Stanwix, was one of great celebration. The day with marked with cannon and musket salutes, cheers for America’s allies, and a day free from the monotonous labor of soldiers’ work.

“Come learn, explore, and make memories with us,” said Park Ranger Valerie Morgan, “There’s something for everyone as we all celebrate the country’s 243rd birthday!”

The next event taking place at Fort Stanwix is the “Operation Sabotage Stanwix” Escape Room (reservations required) and a free showing of “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” both on Saturday, July 13. A full schedule of park events can be found on www.nps.gov/fost. All park events are free.
