On Saturday, August 12, Fort Stanwix National Monument will offer a bicycle tour in honor of the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal and 240th anniversary of the Battle of Oriskany. This special tour will be approximately 12 miles round trip, beginning at Bellamy Harbor Park in Rome, NY at 10 a.m. The trip will continue down the Erie Canal Trail before heading to the Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site. Once there, the ranger will present a program on the battle that changed the balance of power in the Mohawk Valley. The tour will conclude around 2 p.m. back at Bellamy Harbor Park. “Now that summer is in full swing, a bike ride is the perfect way to explore some of the local sites and scenes,” said Ranger Dan Umstead, “The park is happy to be able to provide this unique experience for visitors interested in these historic anniversaries.”Participants are encouraged to wear their helmet and bring water, a lunch, bug spray, and sunscreen. Due to the terrain and distance, this ride is recommended for those ages 16 and older. This event is free, but does require a reservation.
