On Saturday, September 28th Fort Stanwix National Monument will hold this year’s annual International Archeology Day Celebration. Activities will run from 10 am till 4 pm and are free of charge. Archeologists from around New York State will be on site to talk with visitors and share some of their work. Visitors will be able to participate in artifact scavenger hunts, a mock mini-dig, see a barrel making demonstration, take an archeological tour of the park, and challenge their observation skills by documenting reproduction museum objects. There will also be a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the museum collection to hear about the ongoing work and see artifacts not on exhibit.Rome Historical Society, Friends of Fort Stanwix National Monument, will also be hosting a presentation about recent archeological investigations conducted by the Public Archeology Facility at the Binghamton University at the site of Fort Bull. The exhibit “Dig! Study! Share!” will also be available for visitors at the Historical Society’s museum. This exhibit is designed just for kids and features a dig pit full of strange objects ready to be examined and cataloged by young aspiring archeologists. Screens, shovels, brushes, and more can all be used while searching for artifacts, just like at a real archeological dig.
The next event taking place at Fort Stanwix National Monument is the Oneida Carry Days, a French & Indian War Weekend, on Saturday, October 5 in partnership with the Fort Bull Research Group. A full schedule of park events can be found on www.nps.gov/fost. All park events are free.
