In the months after the fighting at Lexington and Concord, rebel Committees of Safety and other political organizations rushed to assume power in their colonies while royal government officials struggled to maintain their authority. Not surprisingly, this situation brought about struggles of will and power, as well as physical conflicts. Such was the case of Alexander White, the first AND last!, Royal Sheriff of Tryon County.

During the nation’s bicentennial in 1976, the idea of us being a UNITED States was very important, and therefore, a rosy picture was sometimes painted in celebrations and histories of our fight for independence from Great Britain. But, historians now fully acknowledge the fact that the United States’ first true “Civil War” occurred during the American Revolution, with many colonists openly supporting the British in many ways.
