Access PassThe America the Beautiful - The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass Series includes the Access Pass: a free, lifetime admission and discount pass for U.S. citizens or permanent residents with permanent disabilities. Access Passes are available online or at Wright Brothers National Memorial entrance station located 30 minutes away. Fort Raleigh National Historic Site does not charge a fee and passes are not available. Audio/Visual AssistanceSign Language InterpretersAvailable for ranger programs with three weeks notice. Call 252-475-9001. This length of time and specificity is needed because we contract for this service with people who may live hours away from the park. Large Print & BrailleLarge print and braille versions of the official Fort Raleigh brochure are available at the park visitor center or a copy of the Braille brochure in a Braille Ready Format (.brf) can be downloaded in advance of your visit. CaptioningCaptioning for the flim shown at the Fort Raleigh visitor center is available on an iPad at the information desk inside the visitor center. Audio DescriptionsDevices equipped with audio descriptions of the exhibits are available for checkout at the visitor center information desk. Service AnimalsQualified service animals assisting people with disabilities are allowed and must be leashed. A service animal is defined as a dog that performs some of the functions and tasks that the individual with a disability cannot perform such as carrying a pack for persons with mobility impairments, assisting persons with balance, or alerting medically-dependent persons of specific conditions such as oncoming seizures. Companion dogs that are used only to provide comfort or emotional support (“therapy animals”), or other pets are not allowed in buildings. Wheelchairs and MobilityA wheelchair is available for check out on a first come, first serve basis from the front desk of the visitor center. Visitor CenterThe visitor center is accessed by four steps with handrails, or a ramp to the front doors. The manual doors open out for access inside. RestroomsRestrooms can be accessed across the paved plaza from the visitor center via two ramps with handrails. The concrete ramp surface is interrupted halfway by a separate concrete slab that creates a one inch bump. The manual doors push open into the restrooms. A family restroom is not located on site. TrailsA flat concrete path leads four hundred feet behind the visitor center to the site where part of the 16th century English settlement has been discovered and the reconstructed earthen fort. The path continues two hundred feet and up a moderate slope to enter the Waterside Theater home of The Lost Colony outdoor drama. |
