The National Park Service is seeking local area citizens to volunteer and help welcome visitors to this special place of American history. Volunteers serving at Fort Raleigh’s visitor center will meet people from around the world and offer hospitality and orientation services to the public. As a "Volunteer-In-Park" or VIP, special stories of Roanoke Island and England’s first settlements in America are shared with park visitors.

Volunteering at the information desk will entail a minimum commitment of a four-hour block of time of time per week. The duties will include answering telephone calls, operating audio visual equipment, ensuring brochures and information is available to visitors, and assisting park staff with interpretive programs, mail and correspondence. The park is seeking people including retired seniors, educators, adults with an interest in history, and college-aged students with a sincere interest in making a park visit meaningful to park visitors.

"A great part of volunteering at a place like Fort Raleigh is that you can learn something new and meaningful every day. It is an immensely rewarding experience when park visitors leave the site with a positive connection that you helped them make," stated Mike Murray, Superintendent, Outer Banks Group.

Training and uniforms will be provided. To learn more about this rewarding volunteer opportunity, please contact Park Ranger Rob Bolling at (252) 473-5772.

Located north of Manteo on Roanoke Island, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site protects and preserves known portions of England’s first New World settlements. The park also preserves the cultural history of the Native Americans, European Americans, and African Americans who have lived on Roanoke Island.
