Second Annual Outer Banks History Weekend - Sir Walter Raleigh and His Colonies

Fort Raleigh National Historic Site will host the second annual Outer Banks History Weekend September 8-9, 2018.  This two-day event will commemorate the 400th year of Sir Walter Raleigh’s death.

On Saturday, September 8, starting at 10:00 am, members of the First Colony Foundation will provide archeological tours at Fort Raleigh that will include updates on recent investigations.

On Sunday, September 9, from 2:00-4:00 pm, a select group of scholars will share their knowledge and current research on the life and impact of Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618) in the film theatre at the Lindsay Warren Visitor Center on the grounds of Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. The following presentations are scheduled:

  • Maps and the Man: Sir Walter Raleigh and Maps
    Peter Barber, Head of Maps (retired), British Library
  • Ralegh’s Two Elizabeths
    Anna Beer, Biographer and Visiting Fellow and Senior Course Tutor in Creative Writing, Kellogg College, Oxford University
  • Studying the Roanokes
    Karen Kupperman, Professor Emeritus of History, New York University
  • Ralegh and the ‘Discoverie of Guiana’: Benevolent Tropical Imperialist, Potential Conquistador, or Self-Interested Opportunist
    Joyce Lorimer, Professor Emeritus of History, Wilfrid Laurier University
The presentations on Sunday will be followed by a question and answer period. The events are free and open to the public.

Fort Raleigh National Historic Site preserves the site on Roanoke Island where English explorers, sponsored by Sir Walter Raleigh, attempted to create England’s first colonial settlement in the New World, 1584-1587. The park is located at 1500 Fort Raleigh Road in Manteo, North Carolina and is open from 9:00-5:00 daily.
