SAVANNAH, GA – Fort Pulaski National Monument will spend the first weekend of the New Year recognizing the historic seizure of the fort by Georgia state militia forces. On January 3, 1861, the U.S. Army was forcibly evicted from the fort, as the country slowly unraveled on its way to Civil War. The Civil War did not officially begin until April 1861. However, throughout January of 1861, state troops around the South began seizing Federal facilities, including Fort Pulaski. The schedule of events for Seizure weekend is as follows: Friday, January 3, 2014 10:00 AM Raising of the Georgia Flag of Secession above Fort Pulaski Saturday, January 4, 2014 10:00 AM Guided Fort Tour Sunday, January 5, 2014 10:30 AM Guided Fort Tour The staff and volunteers of Fort Pulaski National Monument will focus on this moment in the fort’s history from Friday, January 3 through Sunday, January 5, 2014. To simulate the historic event, the Georgia flag of secession will fly above the fort from January 3 until March 4, 2014, the 153rd anniversary of the adoption of the first official national flag of the Confederacy. During this time, the park will interpret the fort as a Confederate occupied military installation daily, except on Saturdays. The park will continue to demonstrate the Union occupation of the fort on Saturdays. Fort Pulaski is located on US Highway 80 E, 12 miles east of Savannah. The entrance fee is $5.00 per adult. Children under the age of 16 are free.
