FARMINGTON, PA: The National Park Service is offering two volunteer training workshops at Fort Necessity National Battlefield. These one day workshops will prepare park volunteers to assist park staff in the presentation of programs about Native American life ways focused on tribes which were involved in the French and Indian War. The workshops will be held on Saturday June 7 and on Sunday June 8. Interested volunteers may sign up for Saturday or Sunday. The workshops will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m. each day. The workshop is free. Act 48 credit is available for teachers. Eight consultants knowledgeable in Eastern Woodland Indian life ways will join the staff of Fort Necessity to conduct the two, one-day workshops. There will be hands-on sessions on traditional home construction, drumming, singing and dancing, foods and food preparation, fire starting, fur trade, wampum, and traditional Indian games. There will also be sessions on cultural misconceptions and on warriors who fought in the French and Indian War. Experienced interpreters will provide tips and techniques on how to present programs in a culturally sensitive manner. Participants will receive background information on historic American Indian life ways among tribes involved in the French and Indian War. All participants must provide a minimum of eight hours of volunteer service at Fort Necessity after they complete this training. This service must be completed by October 31, 2008. Volunteers may assist park rangers with presentations of these activities to the public or in other capacities. Adults who are interested in attending the training and willing to volunteer should apply on online by May 30. Applications for this training can also be mailed to the park. High school students under 18 may attend this training and volunteer if accompanied by a parent or other adult guardian. Information and the registration form are available at www.nps.gov/fone.
