Thank you for your interest in becoming a Fort Necessity National Battlefield volunteer. Below is a list of the most common individual and group volunteer opportunities.
Opportunities for Individuals
History/ Interpretation
Training and research materials are provided to volunteers to develop a variety of interpretive talks and programs relating to Fort Necessity’s primary themes of young George Washington; the French and Indian War; the colonial American period; the French, British and American Indian participants; the Mount Washington Tavern and the National Road. Opportunities in interpretation include:
Volunteer Park Guide - Presents programs interpreting the history of the French and Indian War, the 1754 Fort Necessity campaign as well as the 1755 Braddock campaign. Guides groups of visitors on tours of the battlefield and reconstructed fort. These programs are usually conducted June-September.
Living History Soldier- presents soldier life talks and musket or artillery firing demonstrations on a regular basis to adults and children. These programs are usually conducted June-September. For additional information on this volunteer position click here.
Fur Trade Station- On a regular basis presents talks and hands-on activities to adults and children about the 18th century fur trade. Provides programs on American Indian culture including games and corn grinding. Usually conducted June-September.
Volunteer Visitor Use Assistant- Works the visitor center desk providing information and assistance to visitors. Fill in for the America’s National Parks bookstore clerk. Year round.
Technology Aid
Work with park staff and public information officer on press releases, social media, website development, podcast development, videotaping, photography and other projects as needed.
Library Aid
Assist the librarian on a variety of projects including preparing new books to be processed into the collection, library inventory, re-shelving books and magazines and check for overdue items.
Administrative Aid
Work in the office providing clerical assistance. This would include typing, filing, copying, computer data entry and working on projects as assigned.
Resource Management Aid
Work with the resource management specialist on a variety of projects including monitoring and data collection for water quality, wildlife and fisheries population and habitat management, vegetation and pest management, and human impact assessment.
Maintenance Aid
Assist the maintenance office staff in computer data entry. Other projects could include assisting maintenance in trail rehabilitation, grounds mowing/grooming, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, historic preservation and other related tasks.

Voulnteer Opportunities for Groups
Groups of people are welcome to volunteer at Fort Necessity. It is best to contact the volunteer coordinator with the type of group, age of the participants, the number in the group and the expected date of arrival. Together you can work out an appropriate volunteer opportunity. Groups who have volunteered in the past include reenactment or living history groups, scout groups, college groups and fraternities/sororities, local businesses, corporations and community groups. The park also participates in Project Weed Whack which is another way to volunteer.
