Public invited to provide comment on Environmental Assessment for stream and wetland restoration project at Fort Dupont Park

WASHINGTON— The National Park Service (NPS), in partnership with the District of Columbia Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE), is seeking public comments on an Environmental Assessment (EA) for the proposed Fort Dupont Creek stream and wetland restoration project at Fort Dupont Park in southeast Washington, D.C. The restoration is needed to improve the long-term stability of the multiple streams and improve downstream water quality for the Anacostia River watershed. The public is invited to review the EA and share comments Sept. 5 through Oct. 4.  

This project will restore approximately 18,900 linear feet of Anacostia River tributaries on NPS land between Ely Place SE and Ridge Road SE to the north, Alabama Avenue SE to the southeast, Massachusetts Avenue SE to the south, and I-295 to the west.  

The stream restoration project will: 

• Protect existing sanitary and stormwater infrastructure 

• Reconnect currently eroded channels to the historic wetland/floodplain elevations to reduce erosion 

• Improve instream water quality and aquatic habitat conditions 

• Preserve existing forests, establish native vegetative communities and remove invasive species
