A mining geologist located yttrium fluorite at this locality during World War II. The geologist didn't want collectors to take any of the then very valuable mineral so he completely mined the locality until none was left. This pegmatite is part of the Cripple Creek Granite (1.40-1.43 billion years old), which is older than the Pikes Peak Granite (1.08 Ga).
