Fire Island National Seashore Announces Extended Artist-in-Residence Application Deadline and Special Winter Programs

Patchogue, NY -- The National Park Service is happy to announce an extended deadline for the Fire Island National Seashore Artist-in-Residence program and special winter programs. The Seashore resumed full winter operations this week and is welcoming people back to Fire Island Lighthouse and Wilderness Visitor Center.

 

The application deadline for the Seashore’s popular Artist-in-Residence program has been extended to March 1, 2019. Artists may apply for one of four, two-week residencies on Fire Island. Over 20 artists have participated since the program started more than five years ago and have created visual, sound, installation, and literary works inspired by the barrier island.
 

This winter, visitors are invited to climb Long Island’s tallest lighthouse, discover the wonders of the winter beach, and enjoy a variety of park ranger and partner led programs. Highlights include:

 

Lighthouses are for Lovers, Saturday, February 9, 4:00 to 6:00 PM
Take a sunset tower tour at Fire Island Lighthouse with your “someone special” and enjoy light refreshments on the terrace. To register, call 631-661-4876.
 

The Great Backyard Bird Count, Saturday, February 16*
Join one of the largest citizen science efforts in the world and help tally the number and type of birds near the Fire Island Lighthouse at 11:00 AM and at the William Floyd Estate at 9:00 AM. More info: NPS.gov/FIIS

Pick It Up! Coastal Cleanup, Sunday, February 17, 10:00 AM to noon
For the fourth year in a row, the Riverhead Foundation is leading monthly beach cleanups at Wilderness Visitor Center. Join now, or check the calendar for future dates, and help keep the beach free from debris. More info: NPS.gov/FIIS

Winter Beach Geology Hike, Saturday, March 2, 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM*
You saw it after Sandy; dramatic shifts in the shape of the beach. Take a closer look at the storm-driven and more gradual changes that shape the shoreline with coastal geologist Ruth Coffey. More info: NPS.gov/FIIS

The Fire Island Lighthouse is open year-round with parking available at Robert Moses State Park parking field 5. Starting February 9, 2019, the lighthouse is open weekdays from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM and on weekends from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Please call the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society at 631-661-4876 to check for tower tour availability.  

 

The Wilderness Visitor Center is accessible by car year-round and is located adjacent to Smith Point County Park. The visitor center is open weekends and holidays from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. For more information please call 631-281-3010.
