HYDROTHERMAL CLUES

The hydrothermal features of Yellowstone are surface manifestations of underlying geological forces. The chemical composition of the water in hot springs or geysers provides information about the nature of the underground volcanic system. Fluctuations in a hydrothermal feature’s temperature or action may reflect greater changes at depth.

Geyser cones come in all shapes and sizes
