First Amendment Activities

First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

In Death Valley National Park First Amendment activities are permitted based on the rules for Demonstrations and Sale or Distribution of Printed Matter - 36 CFR 2.51 & 2.52. Maps of pre-approved First Amendment Locations are available. For further information please e-mail us.

To apply, download NPS Form 10-934 Application for Special Use Permit and fill out completely. First Amendment activities are considered a Special Use Permit (SUP) but the $300 application fee is waived.

Furnace Creek Area

Location 1: Dirt area between the parking lot and the west side of the Furnace Creek Visitor Center.

Location 2: Immediately east of CA Highway 190, across from the entrance to Furnace Creek Ranch (approximately 260ft by 110ft).

Stovepipe Wells Area

Location 1: A portion of the unpaved parking lot east of the ranger station.

Location 2: Within the fenced area between the general store and CA Highway 190, excluding the store walkways.

Grapevine & Scotty's Castle Areas

Location 1: Adjacent to Grapevine Ranger Station. The southern half of the parking lot; not to interfere with the use of the restrooms.

Location 2: Scotty's Castle grounds immediatly east of the unfinished swimming pool; not to interfere with the use of the facilities or visitor services. Note: Scotty's Castle is closed and this location is not currently accessible.
