Online Junior Ranger: Base Camp

Welcome to Base Camp! This is the first stop on your Online Junior Ranger journey.

Base Camp is where most mountaineers begin their climb. Here, mountaineers double-check their gear and supplies, let their bodies get used to the high elevation, and make their final plans with the rest of the team. You will do the same – but first, click and drag the picture below to take a look around!

How This Works

To complete your Online Junior Ranger journey, you will progress through a series of webpages named for mountaineering camps on Denali. You will start here at Base Camp and pass through five more camps: Camp 1, Camp 2, Camp 3, Camp 4, and High Camp. Each camp highlights a different Denali theme with exciting content to explore and three activities to complete along the way. You will map your progress by recording answers to activity questions next to camps on a mountain of your own. Start by mapping your mountain!

Map Your Mountain

On a blank sheet of paper, draw a mountain with a route to the summit. Label five mountaineering camps along the way: Camp 1, Camp 2, Camp 3, Camp 4, and High Camp. Leave space next to each camp for your answers to activity questions. After you finish answering questions, you will send your completed map to park rangers at Denali to share your journey and earn your badge. Use the examples below for inspiration:

Rules of the Route

Complete three activities at each mountaineering camp. Instructions are numbered in bold, blue text. Add your answers next to the same camp on your mountain.

Look for key concepts, reflection questions, and action items in bold, black text. You may be asked to watch a video, play a sound, or get up and move!

Look for vocabulary words in italicized text. Research unknown definitions as a bonus challenge!
