Mountain Weather

Weather station telemetry data from 7K and 14K are transmitted hourly to the MesoWest website, including temperatures, wind speed, wind direction, snowfall, and solar radiation.

MountainWeather.com compiles a Denali Weather page, complete with links to the MesoWest data, the NWS Denali Climbing Forecasts, as well as links to FAA webcams.

The National Weather Service publishes their mountain-specific forecast here: Denali Climbing Forecast

Conditions Report

No hard overnight freezes on the lower glacier means travel conditions are getting pretty sloppy between 7,200 and 7,800 feet.  Snowbridges are unreliable.  As is typical this time of year, the active air taxi strip has moved up glacier within the past week -- so climbers will need to ski/trek that extra distance.

Search and Rescue Report

A client on a guided expedition was evacuated from 14,200 foot camp yesterday afternoon due to a head injury with associated nausea.

Feel Good Story of the Season

Don't miss this Alaska Public Radio news story, as well as this one on Talkeetna Community Radio (KTNA) -- because who doesn't love a happy ending to a climbing story?!

Patrol Reports

14K Patrol #6 (Dossin)  Patrol #6 is back down to 14K after three or four nights at high camp.  Several of the team members worked in a daytrip to the summit.  Now back at 14K, they will mind the fort until Friday, when they head down to Basecamp for a flight out on Saturday.

14K Patrol #7 (McBrayer-Guetschow)  Ranger Taylor, VIP Colby, and VIP Kirby ascended to high camp yesterday, with Ranger Joey and VIP Tom sticking around 14K for an extra day to assist with yesterday's evacuation and subsequent continuity of operations.  Joey and Tom headed up the fixed lines to join their teammates at high camp today.  They all will likely return to 14K on Friday, to commence with the 14K pack-up in earnest.

7K Patrol #5 & #6 Swapout  Ranger Alan Davis and Volunteer Steven Blakesley swapped positions at Basecamp on Tuesday with South District Ranger Tucker Chenoweth and VIP Jill Telnack.  Tucker and Jill are tasked with packing up the NPS 7K infrastructure for fly-out.

Photo of the Day

Two climbers in street clothes stand arm in arm inside a ranger station, holding a string of knotted climber ropes and webbing.
Alex Stypula (on left) and Sam Sala (on right), as well as third team member Lauren Bader (not pictured), just returned from a warm and fun spring rock climbing trip in the Pika.  They spent their time ticking off the popular routes in the area such as the Lost Marsupial and the Trolls. We very much appreciate their effort cleaning up tat to make the climbs cleaner and safer for future climbers!   (NPS Photo/Chrissie Oken)
