The East Portal campground has some much-valued shade.
NPS image
East Portal Campground is located near Crystal Dam at the bottom of the Black Canyon. The only access is through the Black Canyon National Park entrance. A $30 entrance fee applies. Turn right just past the entrance station, and follow East Portal Road 5 miles down to the campground.
The campground is shaded by box elder trees and is located near the historic Gunnison River tunnel. Ten of the fifteen sites are walk-in tent sites. The other five sites are vehicle accessible. All sites are first-come, first-served.
Oversize vehicles (greater than 21 feet including trailers) are not permitted on the East Portal Road because of the steep 16% grade, narrow lanes, and sharp curves.
