Once a hidden passage during the Civil War, this cave has been explored for centuries, offering shelter, mystery, and wonder to those who ventured inside. Today, it stands as a geological masterpiece, adorned with breathtaking stalagmites, shimmering flowstone cascades, and the quiet presence of cave-dwelling creatures.

For over a century, visitors have been captivated by Gap Cave’s rich history and stunning formations. Now, you can join a two-hour tour through this underground marvel, walking the same paths as soldiers, explorers, and early tourists before you. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or an adventure seeker, Gap Cave is an experience like no other.

Tour Availability

Guided tours are offered from May through August, with a maximum of 20 participants per tour. Availability may be affected by weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances.

Adults: $8.00
Interagency Senior Pass Holders: $4.00
Interagency Access Pass Holders: $4.00
Children (ages 5-12): $4.00

Refund & Cancellation Policy: Tours are subject to change due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances. If a tour is canceled by the park, participants will be notified and refunded. No refunds will be given for missed tours or late arrivals.

How to Reserve Your Spot

  • Advance reservations are recommended and must be made by noon the day before your desired tour date.
  • If no reservations are made by noon the day before, the tour will be canceled.
  • Reservations are accepted by phone 606-248-2817 or in person at the Visitor Center daily from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.
  • Reservations can be made up to one month before the desired tour date

On the Day of Your Tour

  • Arrive at the Visitor Center in Middlesboro, Kentucky, and pay for your tour at least 30 minutes in advance of the tour start time.
  • After you have paid for your tour, proceed to the Daniel Boone parking area to meet the tour guide. Arrive at least 10 minutes before the start of the tour.
  • To participate in the tour, you must be wearing closed-toe, closed-heel, comfortable shoes.
  • Bring water in a plastic or metal container and outerwear appropriate for weather conditions.
  • The tour will leave promptly at the scheduled time.

What to Expect on Your Tour

  • A trail hike of about a half-mile from the tour starting point to the cave entrance; be prepared for weather conditions.
  • A total hike of 1.5 miles and a moderately strenuous exploration of three cave levels; consider any health conditions or mobility limitations.
  • A total of 183 stairs to navigate during the tour. Consider any mobility limitations.
  • A 2-hour outdoor program; restrooms will not be available after the program starts.
  • A cool underground environment; bring a light jacket if needed.
  • A chance to see unique cave formations and wildlife!

Important Reminders for a Safe & Enjoyable Experience

  • Gap Cave Tours are open to ages 5 and up only.
  • Closed-toe, closed-heel, comfortable shoes are required. No sandals, flip-flops, crocs, high heels, or bare feet are permitted in the cave.
  • No glass, pets, food, or drinks (except water) are permitted in the cave.
  • Tours may be conducted during rainy, humid, or hot conditions, and the cave interior is very cool; be prepared for weather and cave conditions.
  • If you have mobility limitations or health concerns, please assess your ability to participate.
  • Restrooms are located in the parking area at the start of the tour. No restrooms are available during the 2-hour program.

Accessibility & Safety Considerations

  • Due to the nature of the cave terrain, the tour is not wheelchair accessible.
  • Visitors should be prepared for uneven surfaces, stairs, steep drop-offs, and dim lighting.
  • White-Nose Syndrome disease does not affect people but is deadly to bats. The disease spores last a long time and can be carried from one cave to another on people's clothing or shoes. To help prevent its spread:
    • Wear clean footwear and clothing that have not been in other caves.
    • Ensure footwear and clothing worn while in a cave are properly decontaminated.
