Park staff and volunteers have assessed conditions and addressed damage caused in late September by Hurricane Helene. Hundreds of trees fell during the storm. Initial efforts focused on park roads and front country camping facilities. Crews have now cleared most trails. There are still a few trees down, and a few upright and leaning trees at high risk of falling. Washouts, damage to water crossings, and other unpredictable hazards may also be present.
Current park conditions as of 11/20/2024:
While most of the park is open, there are still a few areas of concern.
Campground and Picnic Areas
All are open and available except:
Gibson Gap campsite is still closed.
Modified camping is needed at Chadwell Gap Camp. While it is OPEN, the bear cables at are gone. Campers must bring their own rope to secure their food.
Hiking Trails
All hiking trails are open to hikers. Hikers will need to be aware of three root balls and several down trees:
At Ewing Trail, hikers will encounter a large root ball and 1 downed tree but should be able to navigate around them.
At White Rocks Connector Trail, hikers will encounter 2 root balls but should be able to navigate around them.
At Sugar Run Trail, hikers will encounter a couple of downed trees but should be able to navigate around them.
All Bike trails and Horseback Riding Trails are OPEN.
Your safety is our utmost priority. We urge you to stay updated with the latest information, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we continue to safely restore access to park trails and areas.
Uprooted Trees on Ewing & White Rocks Connector Trail
While these trails are open to hikers, we urge everyone to use caution when maneuvering around the obstacles.
