Cumberland Gap National Historical Park will have temporary closures to the Wilderness Road Campground and Picnic Area due to required road surface repairs in the next two months. The National Park’s Wilderness Road Picnic Area located adjacent to the Wilderness Road Campground on Highway 58 will be closed beginning May 19, 2008 and will remain closed until May 31, 2008. The following reservable shelters will be available to serve visitors during this time: Bartlett Park, located behind the park visitor center, Civic Park at Ewing, Virginia, and Sugar Run Picnic Area on Hwy 988. These group picnic shelters are reservable on a first come – first served basis by calling the park visitor center. The park also offers several picnic areas adjacent to the group picnic shelters and along the paved trail running from the visitor center parking lot towards Middlesboro. The Wilderness Road Campground closure dates are from Monday, June 2 to June 30, 2008. All campsites within this front-country camping area will be closed during this period, including group camp sites and the group picnic shelter known as 0-4. Backcountry sites will not be affected by this closure but the trailheads that are located within the Wilderness Road Picnic Area and Campground will not be accessible during the above closure times. Hikers are encouraged to contact the visitor center with questions regarding alternate routes to backcountry camping areas. Special campfire and music programs scheduled for the campground amphitheater in June will be relocated to another venue.
