Soldiers used cattle horns to hold gunpowder, as mugs, and as salt holders. They often etched decorations onto them in a process known as scrimshaw.

In 1932, the Daniel Morgan chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Cherokee County, South Carolina raised money to buy an acre of land. They deeded it to the federal government, and work began on the monument. The US Monument was unveiled in April and dedicated on June 14, 1932, and was placed under the management of the War Department.
