PHILADELPHIA - National Park Service (NPS)—National Park Service Northeast Region (NER) Director Gay Vietzke has named Kelly Fellner as the new superintendent of Springfield Armory National Historic Site in Massachusetts. She will also administer Coltsville National Historical Park, which is in the process of being established as an NPS site.“Kelly is such a good fit for Springfield Armory and Coltsville because she values collaboration so highly,” said Vietzke. “She is an experienced manager who has a strong track record of building partnerships and community, and I believe she is the right person to lead Springfield Armory. Additionally, her experience working with new and emerging parks in urban areas will be a great asset to the development of Coltsville.”
“I look forward to working with the committed employees, volunteers, and community partners of Springfield Armory National Historic Site and Coltsville National Historical Park,” said Fellner. “Parks rely on a complex network of municipalities, agencies, and community groups. Together, we can preserve the architecture and stories of technology and human innovation of both Springfield Armory and the new park we are creating together in the Coltsville Historic District.”
Fellner has worked for the NPS for 30 years. Since 2015, she has served as assistant superintendent at Fire Island National Seashore, overseeing, partnerships, planning, and public affairs. Prior to that, she spent five years as the Northeast Region Youth and Volunteer Programs Manager, where she increased the number of partnership programs as well as the funding for service and work opportunities for diverse youth.
Fellner’s NPS career has spanned a range of responsibilities in a variety of different parks. She was chief of Visitor Services and Youth Engagement at Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area, supervisory park ranger at Longfellow National Historic Site, lead ranger at Olmsted National Historic Site, park ranger at Lowell National Historic Park and Tsongas Industrial History Center, and historian with National Register programs in the Intermountain Region. She also had temporary assignments as superintendent at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area and assistant superintendent at Appalachian National Scenic Trail.
Fellner holds a Master’s degree in Public History and Museum Administration from Northeastern University and a Bachelor of Arts in History and Anthropology from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
