The National Park Service is making available for public review and comment a wetland and floodplain statement of findings for planned repairs and stabilization of a portion of the York River shoreline that has been severely eroding and is threatening the integrity of Colonial Parkway at Colonial National Historical Park. The repair and stabilization project will be conducted in phases, as described in the Repair and Stabilize the York River Shoreline to Protect the Colonial Parkway Environmental Assessment (EA), released in June of 2012.

The purpose of the project is to protect the Colonial Parkway from the imminent threat of shoreline erosion along the York River and associated landward migration of the shoreline, particularly in areas where it runs in close proximity to the parkway. Action is needed at this time in order to mitigate and remediate the effects of historic and continuing storm damage to the parkway. This statement of findings was prepared to evaluate the impacts to floodplains and wetlands for the first phase of construction, which is planned for a section of shoreline beginning at Indian Field Creek and extending one thousand four hundred feet to the east.

Because public participation is very important to the success of the project, the National Park Service encourages your review and comment on the wetland and floodplain statement of findings. The statement of findings will be on public review for 15 days, with comments accepted through December 20, 2022. The document is available electronically for review and comment online by visiting http://parkplanning.nps.gov/colo.
