Williamsburg, VA--- On June 3, 2023, Colonial National Historical Park partnered with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to host two litter pickups at separate locations along the Colonial Parkway. Approximately 50 volunteers from local businesses and the community picked up over 650lbs of trash during the three-hour event. With frequent recreational usage throughout the year, the areas of College Creek and Archer’s Hope were designated litter pickup zones for Clean the Bay Day.

"The waters and beaches along the Colonial Parkway are a beloved recreational resource of surrounding community members and visiting tourists, particularly during the summer months,” said Superintendent Jerri Marr. “The recreational use in these areas can contribute to an increase of litter. Protecting our natural resources and keeping our shorelines clean is a priority for Colonial National Historical Park and ensures we can preserve and protect our waterways for years to come.”

For more than 50 years, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation has been dedicated to educating the public on issues surrounding the Chesapeake Bay, as well as advocating for pollution reduction throughout the watershed. Since 1989, the Foundation has hosted Clean the Bay Day in Virginia as a three-hour opportunity for community members to assist in cleaning their local Chesapeake Bay watershed. Colonial National Historical Park was established in 1930 to preserve important 17th and 18th century sites that tell the story of English colonization and the struggle for American independence. Jamestown’s legacy includes representative government, but also slavery, a brutal institution that spread throughout the colonies. At Yorktown, Virginia colonists fought in the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War. The 23-mile Colonial Parkway links the sites and is recognized as an “All-American road”.
