Bicycle Safety Warning System

Roadway sign indicates to motorists that bicyclists are ahead.
A safety sign indicates to motorists when bicyclists are ahead.
Through a cooperative agreement with Montana State University a pilot cyclist safety warning system is located on the east hill of Colorado National Monument. Two lighted signs are placed in zones where motorists and cyclists share the narrow roadway. An inductive loop recognizes bicycles and automatically sets off warning lights for motor traffic approaching from behind.

The purpose of the system is to:
  • Prepare motorists to slow as they approach cyclists
  • Count cyclists using Rim Rock Drive
