This summer, a pavement preservation project is scheduled for Rim Rock Drive and other road surfaces in the park. Work begins on April 2nd and is estimated to be completed by August 5th. This project will extend the life of the pavement on Rim Rock Drive for another 7-10 years. It will also provide a better driving and bicycling experience for everyone who comes to the monument.

Check your dates on the timeline below to see if your trip will be impacted. During your visit to the park, please drive carefully and keep an eye out for work crews. Thank you for your patience as we complete this project! Contact us if you have questions.

Project Timeline:

  • April 2nd to April 5th: the damaged culvert by the Balanced Rock pullout on the west side of the park will be repaired. There will be single lane closures with up to 15 minute delays.

  • April 16 to May 20th: Repair work on sections of damaged asphalt throughout the park. This will involve single lane closures with delays of up to 15 minutes. Occasional closures of the portion of Rim Rock Drive between Independence Monument View and DS Road will be necessary. No delays or closures are scheduled for evenings or weekends. Access to Glade Park on the east side and the Visitor Center on the west side will not be affected.

  • May 2nd to May 21st: Hot tar will be used to seal cracks along Rim Rock Drive. There will be delays of up to 15 minutes.

  • May 22nd to June 6th: Resurfacing will be done using a Polymer microsurfacing material along the entire road. Expect delays of up to 15 minutes. The road will be drivable and bikeable within an hour of application.

  • July 8 to July 24th: All pullouts will be resurfaced with the Polymer microsurfacing material. There may be delays of up to 15 minutes.

  • July 15 to July 25th: The campground, Visitor Center, and Devils Kitchen will be resurfaced. All campsites will move to same-day reservations during this time period. Rolling closures of all three loops will occur while their roads are being resurfaced. Once dates are set for when each loop will be closed, we will update this page.

  • July 8th to August 5th: Painting for all stripes and pavement markings.
