Fruita, CO – Colorado National Monument and Colorado National Monument Association are hosting the second annual Plein Air Event, October 1-7, 2018. Eighteen local, regional and nationally known artists have been invited to create works of art as they spend time along the canyon rims.
Plein Air is a style of painting developed in mid-19th century France in which the artwork is created outside. Artists will be painting in and around the monument starting Monday, October 1st, until noon on Friday October 5th. Everyone is invited to visit the monument and watch as artists create stunning works of art. Regular monument entrance fees apply.
Key events during the week:
Wednesday, October 3: “Paint Out”
Saddlehorn Picnic Area 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m
The artists will meet for the morning at Saddlehorn Picnic area to paint some of the best views of Monument Canyon. This is a great opportunity to see and talk with all the artists while they are working in the same area.
Friday, October 5: Preview Night and Awards Ceremony
Redlands Community Center (2463 Broadway, Grand Junction, CO 81507)
5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Be among the first to publicly view and purchase the artwork created during the week. Free admission for all Colorado National Monument Association members and sponsors. Non-member tickets are $30 which includes a Chinle level membership to Colorado National Monument Association.
Saturday and Sunday October 6 and 7: Art Exhibition

Exhibit Open – Saturday Oct 6 - 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Sunday Oct 7 - 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Quick Draw – Saturday Oct 6 - 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Everyone is invited to admire the artist’s beautiful creations. At 3:00 p.m. the artists will participate in a Quick Draw event on the Redlands Community Center lawn. All artwork created during the week and at the quick draw will be available for purchase. Part of the proceeds will go to Colorado National Monument Association which supports educational programs and research projects at the monument.
Fall hours will start at Colorado National Monument on September 30, 2018. The visitor center will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. For additional information please visit www.nps.gov/colm or call 970-858-3617, ext. 360.
