MOUNT PLEASANT, SC – The National Park Service will hold a virtual public meeting to share phase three of the exhibit plans for Charles Pinckney National Historic Site on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at 5:00 pm. National Park Service staff and exhibit contractors, the Design Minds, will present the latest draft of the exhibit plan. All are invited to attend.
Simultaneously, National Park Service staff will hold an in-person meeting for up to ten people to provide accommodations for those without Internet access at Liberty Square Visitor Education Center, 340 Concord Street Charleston, SC. To register for the meeting, please contact Chief of Interpretation Paula Ogden-Muse at e-mail us. We ask the public who register to attend in-person to follow CDC and state and local guidance, maintain social distancing, and wear a face covering when social distance cannot be maintained.
Park Superintendent Tracy Stakely states, “This is a unique opportunity to design exhibits for a truly exceptional site. Charles Pinckney National Historic Site shares the story of Charles Pinckney, a signer and contributor of the US Constitution, and the story of the contributions of enslaved African Americans to Lowcountry history and culture. These stories are inextricably linked. The work of the enslaved population created wealth and social standing for the Pinckney family, which in turn afforded the Pinckneys' opportunities for public service. These are some of the legacies we hope to explore within the interpretive exhibits. We are eager to hear public comments on the exhibit plan.”

This project will replace the current 900 square feet of exhibits with approximately 1,750 square feet of exhibits designed to engage and appeal to younger and more diverse audiences. The new exhibits will have inclusive content with Passcode and interactive components, including a space where changing exhibits, demonstrations, and audience centered experiences can be presented. The exhibits will incorporate universal design principles to create barrier free access. More than 35,000 visitors per year will benefit from this project.
The exterior grounds of the Charles immersive National Historic Site are free and open to the public Wednesday-Sunday, 9:00 am-5:00 Pinckney. The historic house remains closed. For more information on the park, please visit the park’s website at www.nps.gov/chpi.
