Charles Pinckney National Historic Site invites the public to a free film series at 2:00 pm on March 18 and 25, 2012. Rangers will introduce documentaries about Gullah culture and history in the Lowcountry. These films complement the Gullah heritage programs that are presented at the park each Saturday during the same period. Allow about an hour for each screening, with guest speakers to follow.
March 18: The park will screen PBS's Slavery and the Making of America: The Challenge of Freedom (2005) at 2:00 pm. This film tells the story of emancipation by focusing on the life of "Gullah Statesman" Robert Smalls, an enslaved South Carolinian who escaped to freedom during the Civil War and became active in politics during Reconstruction. After the screening, Park Ranger Donel Singleton will discuss African-American soldiers in the Civil War and the upcoming 150th anniversary of Robert Smalls' escape.
March 25: The park will screen ChasDOC's Bin Yah: There's No Place Like Home (2007) at 2:00 pm. This film looks at the threat of suburban development to historic African-American communities and the preservation of Gullah culture. Using the testimonies of Mount Pleasant residents, the film explores the significance of land and the concept of home. Director Justin Nathanson will discuss his work and conduct a question and answer session after the screening.
