Contact: Bill Martin, (834) 883-3123 x 41 On Friday, September 17 (Constitution Day) America's newest citizens were sworn at Charles Pinckney National Historic Site. Approximately 136 people took the Oath of Citizenship, administered by U.S. District Court Magistrate Joseph McCrorey. This was the seventh annual naturalization ceremony at the site, and the 217th birthday of the United States Constitution. Charles Pinckney was a principal framer and a signer of the Constitution. Among his contributions was the Pinckney Draught, the only complete framework of government that was written by a single man and presented at the Constitutional Convention in 1787. The Pinckney Draught included a provision for the naturalization of citizens, among many other ideas that are in the U.S. Constitution today. The site preserves a remnant of his country estate and plantation, Snee Farm. Approximately 500 people attended the event. There were no incidents. |
