Instructions:

  1. Using a green colored pencil, lightly shade in your leaf. In the spring, trees grow new leaves that are green that last throughout the summer. A chemical pigment called chlorophyll is turning the leaves green.
  2. In the fall, as temperatures drop, chlorophyll starts to break down. Other pigments called carotenoids become more visible. These pigments look yellow, so color in your leaf yellow on top of the green.
  3. Later in the fall, as temperatures get colder, trees produce a new chemical called anthocyanin. Color in your leaf red and/or purple to show how anthocyanin changes the leaf's color.
  4. By the winter, trees' leaves have begun falling on the ground and have died. Darkly color your leaf brown to show a dead leaf that has fallen off the tree.
