Fort Oglethorpe, GA: The National Park Service is advising the beginning of repair work on a 1.09 mile section of the Red Trail located in the northwest corner of the Chickamauga Battlefield. This section is part of the equestrian trail that intersects the yellow trail. The park is utilizing an agreement with the Southeast Conservation Corp (SECC) to have a student work crew repair the trail section that floods when rain occurs. This project will rebuild the trail tread called turnpike, which will allow the rain runoff to follow drainages and not flow onto the trail.

This repair project has begun and will continue until its estimated reopening on July 25, 2016. During this timeframe, the entire 1.09 mile section of the red trail will remain closed to all foot and equestrian traffic for the safety of the workers and visitors while the work continues.

Including this small section of the Red Trail which is currently closed, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park offers 100 miles of trails which create opportunities for visitors to experience Civil War battlefields,to access monuments and tablets memorializing fallen soldiers, and to learn about the Trail of Tears.
