Glory or the Grave: The Breakthrough, the Union Collapse, and the Defense of Horseshoe Ridge, September 20, 1863 is the second volume in The Chickamauga Campaign, David Powell's magnificent three-volume study of this overlooked and often misunderstood campaign.Powell depicts the final day of battle, when the Confederate army attacked and broke through the Union lines. The massive rout that ensued was ameliorated somewhat by an incredible defensive stand atop Horseshoe Ridge, which Powell carefully dissects at the regimental level. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: David A. Powell is a 1983 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute with a B.A. in history. Powell lives and works in Chicago, Illinois. September 19 –20, 2015: Frank Varney will be available to sign his book, General Grant and the Rewriting of History. Varney will also provide a special program on Sunday, September 20, 2015 at 1 pm in the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center. General Grant and the Rewriting of History - Professor Varney sheds new light on what really happened on some of the Civil War's most important battlefields. He does so by focusing much of his work on Grant's treatment of Major General William S. Rosecrans, a capable army commander whose reputation Grant (and others working with him) conspired to destroy. Grant's memoirs contain not only misstatements but outright inventions to manipulate the historical record. Grant submitted decidedly biased reports, falsified official documents, and even perjured himself before an army court of inquiry. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Frank Varney earned his Ph.D. at Cornell University. He teaches U.S. and classical history at Dickinson State University of North Dakota, where he is also the director of the Theodore Roosevelt Honors Leadership Program. September 19 –20, 2015: Matt Spruill will be available to sign his books, Guide to the Battle of Chickamauga, Storming the Heights: A Guide to the Battle of Chattanooga, and Winter Lightning: A Guide to the Battle of Stones River, Second Edition.
