Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia: Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park Superintendent Brad Bennett announces that the general management planning effort focused on Moccasin Bend National Archeological District is nearing completion. The planning effort will amend the 1988 General Management Plan for Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park to provide management guidance for the Moccasin Bend unit of the park. Bennett stated, “This amendment will shape the management direction for over 700 acres of land on Moccasin Bend, which was included in the park in 2003. This plan will identify management zoning for the entire Moccasin Bend portion of the national park, with each zone defining a set of desired conditions, visitor experiences, and appropriate activities and facilities for that zone. Reflecting comments received on the draft alternatives, a preferred alternative has been developed that focuses on the national park’s primary purpose: commemorating 12,000 years of American Indian presence on Moccasin Bend and the meaningful sacrifices made by Americans during the Civil War.”

The preferred alternative for Moccasin Bend can be viewed at: https://parkplanning.nps.gov/chch. Comments can be submitted electronically through the website from May 1 through May 30, 2017.

The park will host an open house on Thursday, May 4, 2017 between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Outdoor Chattanooga in Coolidge Park at 200 River Street in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The open house will focus on the National Park Service’s preferred alternative. Park staff will also share how comments were addressed on the draft alternatives and how to provide comments during the public review period. There will be presentations at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Comment forms will also be available at the open house.
