On Saturday, November 11, at 2 pm, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will present a 90-minute, 1/2-mile hike in Chickamauga Battlefield discussing the monuments located along Battleline Road. This tour begins inside the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center and will caravan to the program location.
The line of Union monuments extending the length of Battleline Road mark where Union troops constructed make-shift breastworks of logs and rocks during the early morning hours of September 20, 1863. These actions helped secure their positons and, in turn, helped to successfully halt the Confederate assault. Many of these monuments date to the early years of the park. They were placed by the veterans and tell the stories of the men who fought and died for the beliefs they held. Today, these monuments help us understand the battle in which these men fought. Please remember to dress appropriately for weather conditions and to wear comfortable shoes. A bottle of water is recommended and chairs for sitting may also be brought.
