Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park would like to invite parents and guardians of Orchard Knob Elementary School's 4th graders and Spring Creek Elementary School's 5th graders, as well as the general public, to participate in a special program and unveiling ceremony of the park's "Freedom Quilt" on Thursday, May 8, 2014, at 9:30 am, at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center. The national military park received funding from the National Park Foundation in 2013 and used the funds to provide Title I schools with transportation assistance so students could visit Chickamauga Battlefield or Lookout Mountain Battlefield. While visiting, students received curriculum – based, ranger – guided programs focused on emancipation and abolition during the Civil War. With the help of the Friends of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, the park was able to help bring over 1,600 students to the battlefields. However, student participation did not end after their park visit. Students from Orchard Knob Elementary School (4th grade) and Spring Creek Elementary School (5th grade) went the extra mile and created quilt squares that would be sewn into a "Freedom Quilt," an example of the quilts used to assist enslaved African Americans find freedom before and during the Civil War. The remaining quilt squares and final sewing of the quilt was completed by the Battlefield Peacemaker Quilt Guild, Orchard Knob Elementary School Teacher Mandy Maddox, and Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park Volunteer Joy Odom.
