Fort Oglethorpe, GA: Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to attend a special walking tour that will explore one of the more famous "common" Confederate soldiers engaged in the Battle of Chickamauga on Saturday, July 5, at 1:30 pm. Visitors should meet at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center and caravan to the program location. Sam Watkins' memoir, Co. Aytch, offers one of the most vivid accounts of a soldier's life both in camp and on the battlefield during the American Civil War. It is always of great value when a historian locates a primary source document that presents a vivid connection to the writer's experiences. This program will explore some of the literary and historical events surrounding Private Watkins and his comrades in Company H of the 1st Tennessee Infantry during the Battle of Chickamauga. We hope to see you for this tour focusing on one of the best known Confederate memoirs still in print. Comfortable footwear and water are recommended for this program. |
