Fort Oglethorpe, GA: Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to participate in a free one hour, ranger-guided program on Saturday, March 5 at 2 pm. This program will discuss President Andrew Jackson and how he can be viewed not only as an American hero, but perhaps also as a scoundrel.Parking for the program will be at the Gateway Site off Hamm Road (10 Hamm Road, Chattanooga, TN 37405)."Special Event" signs will also be placed along Manufacturers and Hamm roads to help guide visitors to event parking. In the election of 1832, Americans flooded the polls and overwhelmingly re-elected "Old Hickory" to the White House, touting him as one of the nation's greatest presidents, despite his decision to support the controversial Indian Removal Act of 1830. However, in recent years that decision has tarnished the luster of his greatness, even causing some to petition for his removal from the twenty dollar bill.History can be a harsh judge, but was Jackson to blame or was he merely carrying out the wishes and intentions of our nation's founding fathers? Visitors are encouraged to wear weather appropriate clothing, to bring a portable chair, and water. |
